THANKS!

June 30, 2009 - Leave a Response

I just wanted to say “thanks” to everyone who watched and supported my work, particularly; on News 3 at 9 and News 3 at 10.
There is another round of lay-off’s underway at the station and I’ve just been informed my position is being eliminated.
I consider many of you friends and hope you’ll keep in touch:
tebarr27@yahoo.com

Unfortunately, I am not alone in these lay-offs however; feel especially sad for a few of my caring co-workers who will be expected to pick up the load of anchoring, reporting– both In Depth and “On Your Side” as well as producing, writing for the shows and writing for the blog, twitter and Madison Magazine.

Again– thanks!

ON YOUR SIDE GOES ON-LINE TO FIND DEALS AND GARDENING!?

June 4, 2009 - Leave a Response

Greetings to all following a wonderful and much-needed vacation for my family. We did alot of traveling around the Midwest (..”exotic” locations according to my husband!) but also took time to relax a bit and plant our first grown-up garden! It’s something we both helped with as kids but rediscovering the joy of watching things you lovingly put into the ground, quickly sprout; is more fun than we realized! I’ll let you know how it goes and suggestions are certainly welcomed!

I’m also back on our “On Your Side” search for money-saving deals. This time it’s taking me to the internet, where searching can lead to all sorts of savings. A few viewers recently e-mailed to complain about shopping websites asking for special promotional codes to get the deal. If you don’t already have the code there’s a simple step to finding it: go to Google and type in the words “promotion codes” and the name of the website where you’re shopping. We tried it by Googling “promotion code” and “Borders Books.” We ended up with $10 off the price of an audio-book we’d been searching for– what a deal!

And if you’d rather print, instead of clip your favorite coupons; I found some new sites to check out: www.coupons.com or www.smartsource.com share pages of printable grocery coupons. However both sites will ask you to download some special software. It’s free to do and helps verify the source when the coupon prints. Also, one of our viewers e-mailed about this site: www.freestuffonline.com
and says she is using this to get and try free samples; sometimes regular sized items! She also writes the products often come with coupons, so if she likes what she tries; the coupon gets her a deal on the next purchase.
Thanks for continuing to share some of your great, smart, money-saving ideas. We’ll do the same as we move into summertime in Wisconsin!

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: THE MADISON AREA MUSIC AWARDS…

May 11, 2009 - Leave a Response

..It was an amazing show, Saturday night, May 9th; at the Barrymore in Madison.
A great, rowdy crowd who loves their local music– filling the most seats in the 3+ years I’ve been involved. And it was people of all ages and interests enjoying performances from bands, artists, d.j.’s and even dancers of all types.
“THE MAMAS” is again a dress-up affair. I’ve described it as our area’s version of the grammy’s. You can walk the red carpet as you arrive and once inside, check out the amazing outfits: girls and women in cocktail dresses, evening gowns and funky rock-n-roll type clothes (my favorite was a bright blue dress and the young lady was wearing a wig to match! Fun!) The men and boys did not disappoint: from 2 or 3 piece suits to tux-jackets with jeans and some fun t-shirts under cool jackets. The hair and hats were also fun. (my favorite was an all black long-jacket tux with a black derby hat and all white accents. Nice!)
My Madison T.V., channel 14 is one of the event sponsors; and we introduced the nominees for the biggest award of the night: Artist of the Year— during a “My Madison” Music series only on News 3 at 9 last week. You met Maggie and Sims from Harmonious Wail, DuDu and D.L.O. from dumate, JAH Boogie and Aaron from Natty Nation, and Lucas from The Lucas Cates Band. It was a fun week of local musicians joining me live to talk about their craft and we used video from our partner “Urban Theater” to showcase their music during the interview.
The winner? The Lucas Cates Band.
I got to speak briefly with Lucas via his Mom’s cell phone and the band was surprised and thrilled. The band is on the road (this particular night getting ready to play in Idaho) in the middle of a month+ long tour around the western states. Both Mom & Dad accepted awards on their behalf.
The goal of the awards show is to get and keep kids, who otherwise can’t afford to play music or buy an instrument; active with music.
One young lady’s grown into a second violin– both provided by “THE MAMAS.” We saw an amazing performance by a group from West High– which helps you realize why putting young people and music together is a winning combination.
Some of you have asked why I’m interested. I feel really lucky that my parents started my music education in 3rd grade with piano lessons. I played into my college years where I would accompany music majors during their senior concerts. I also played alto saxophone from 6th grade through my sophomore year of college. It’s fun and a great way to meet people with similar interests. I found it a wonderful way to bond with friends who are still my pals today. My brother’s also played in band– one was a first chair trumpet and beautiful singer in swing choir and barbershop quartet; the other jammed on the drums and also found a great voice for madrigal. I think music can also be a good diversion for kids who might otherwise get in trouble. I encourage all parents to get your children involved– the earlier the better! (One of the winning bands has been together since junior high school!

WORK AT HOME JOBS AND TIPS WHILE ON THE HUNT…

May 6, 2009 - Leave a Response

We tackled those work at home opportunities in Wednesday night’s “On Your Side” report at 6 p.m. Bottom line: don’t trust ‘em.
We featured three in our report and each received an “F” for failing the Better Business Bureau’s standards for ethical behavior.
Here’s how to check any you may be considering: www.bbb.org
And then look for reviews or grades.
You can also find specific complaints about work at home companies being monitored by the Federal Trade Commission at: www.ftc.gov

New tips for your job hunt! I received these from the Senior District P.R. Manager with Office Team via e-mail and found the list interesting for passing along to you.
1. Mind your manners: especially when checking in with the company receptionist prior to your interview. 6 out of 10 managers say they ask for the receptionist’s opinion!
2. If you don’t have anything nice to say: hiring managers call listening to potential employee’s vent about former jobs, co-workers or bosses; a big turn off.
3. Do your homework: researching the prospective employer is the most important step prior to applying for any job. Tailor your resume and cover letter to the opportunity.
4. Don’t sell yourself short: Your resume shouldn’t be a laundry list of former job duties. Highlight achievements and contributions.
5. Always send a thank-you note: Employers notice! Nine out of ten told the Office Team researchers a thank-you boosts a person’s chance of landing a job.

And tune in to News 3 at 10– we’re sharing area job openings through our “Who’s Hiring” segment. If you HAVE an opening: send your information to: efranke@wisctv.com

ROLLER DERBY, RECORDS AND MORE…

April 24, 2009 - Leave a Response

Remember record albums? Vinyl was being celebrated in Madison last weekend at B-Side Records and Exclusive Company on State Street, Strictly Discs on Monroe, Sugar Shack on Atwood and MadCity Music Exchange on Williamson. We hit three of the five and enjoyed a day full or albums being played, live music and super friendly staffs all around. If you haven’t been to any of these stores— it’s worth your time to check ‘em out!
Another new experience: flat track roller derby! I’d done a story or two in the past, but the bout is a different beast. We played derby bingo and learned the rules along the way; plus witnessed a few records broken by members of the Mad Rollin’ Dolls. Cudos to them.  We’ll be back for the next bout with friends and family in tow.
I grew up near Green Bay, visited Madison often.. but moved out of state for several years.  And despite moving back (Madison) a few years ago, I’m still amazed at the depth of things to do here every weekend. I invite you to take a risk and try something new. You won’t regret it!

HERE’S THE RECIPE…

April 9, 2009 - Leave a Response

I received a request during our 4-week “On Your Side” series in search of deals.  Della wrote via e-mail; she just started using generic grocery items and was wondering if she could get the lasagna recipe the woman in our story was making out of store brand products.  I got back in touch with Carrie—- and she’s happy to share the recipe!

1 pound ground beef, 1 small chopped green pepper, 1 small chopped onion, 3 cloves of garlic, 1 jar spaghetti sauce, italian seasoning, garlic powder, pepper, 6 lasagna noodles, 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, half a cup of parmesan cheese:   brown beef, onion, pepper and garlic; drain.  Stir in spaghetti sauce and spices to taste.  Simmer while boiling the noodels.  Now in a skillet, spread 1/4 cup of meat sauce, top with 3 noodles cut to fit as needed.  Spread 1/2 of the remaining sauce and 1/2 mozzarella and parmesan cheeses.  Top with remaining noodles, meat sauce and parmesan.  Cover and heat on medium for 3 minutes.  Reduce heat to low and cook for 30 minutes.  Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella and let stand 10 minutes with skillet cover ajar.  Enjoy!

If you are still looking for more money-savings at the supermarket; our partners at Consumer Reports offer a quick list of tips to help.  Go to:  www.consumerreports.org   then search for “13 ways to save at the supermarket.”

And I hope you’ll continue to share your own cost-cutting ideas with me and we’ll pass it along to our viewers.  Teri      tbarr@wisctv.com

ON YOUR SIDE: DEALS

March 26, 2009 - Leave a Response

I’m on the search for deals as we all try to save money for ourselves and our family.  I’ve already reported on some pretty amazing vacation deals for spring and summer; along with a taste and cost comparison of name and store brands.  (see channel3000.com, click on the “money” tab, then “smart savings” column for past segments)

This time it’s all about shopping for clothes and home-goods in a thrifty manner.   A new survey from the National Retail Federation shows shopping for specialty department store items is no longer a “must have;” while shopping discount or thrift is one of the top things consumer are not willing to give up!

We hit a local re-sale store with Barbara; who says she turned to thrift, after finding a new, still-tagged, $90 pair of Ralph Lauren pants— for $8.99.  Now;  she’s donating then shopping, up to twice a week.  Pillows for less than a few bucks, glassware for 99-cents.  She suggests knowing what you need and opening your mind to what you may find!

Here’s a few places we found while working on this report:                                                                                                                           –HospiceCare Thrift Store, 122 Junction Road, Madison  (608) 833-4556  (Charming, clean, well-organized.  Everything from home decor to jewelry to antiques.  Items are donated with money supporting the work of HospiceCare, Inc.)                                                                                                                                                                                                           –Goodwill Industries with several locations but main donation/store site is 4530 Verona Road, Madison (608) 271-4687 (Clean, bright, quality controlled and labeled.  Everything you can think of  at rock bottom prices.  Items donated with money supporting Goodwill.)                                                                                                                                                         –Salvation Army Family Store, 1721 Thierer Road, Madison (608) 244-2321 (Newly painted, items ready to use without much fuss, fixing or clean up.  Items donated with money supporting Salvation Army efforts.)

D-TV TRANSITION

February 11, 2009 - 4 Responses

Still confused?  You are not alone.  I’m hearing from many of you with the most recent questions coming due to the economy:  “do I have to pay for cable or satellite to get a t.v. signal after February 17th?”

No.

Here’s the options:  If you have an old t.v.; with what will be the old analog signal—- you need a converter box.  It handles the signal change and allows you to keep using your old t.v.                                                                    News 3 has an exclusive partnership with Consumer Reports and a recent test of more than 30 converter boxes shows all receiving an o.k. rating.  Three were picked as offering the best quality and price:  1) Alpha Digital AT2016 @ $55.00  2) Tivax STB-T9 @ $50.00 and 3) Access HD-DTA 1010D @ $60.00.    Each offers closed captioning, a remote, ease when adding new channels, control buttons on the box and includes an AV cable.       The government continues to offer $40.00 coupons to fulfill new requests; however, the program is in need of funding and currently lost, stolen or expired coupons will not be replaced.                                                                                                                                      The other choice is for those of you with a newer High Definition  television.  If you have HD-TV you can use a UHF-VHF antenna to get your picture.  This works because most stations broadcast on the UHF frequency.  A basic model costs around $20.00 at an electronics store.  Finally; if you are already paying for cable or satellite– you are all set.  The  subscription services will handle the transition for you.

This switch is federally mandated and will help open lines for emergency services use.   Congress voted to push the change-over date to June; but all television stations in the Madison area will still transition in February.  A survey indicates most viewers are aware and prepared for the change.  It also allows our station to cease the operation and expense of both a digital and analog tower.                                                                                                              And something I see as a big plus—- you’ll be able to watch News 3 at 9 on T.V.W.-My Madison T.V.  (Cable/satellite channel 14 or digital 3.2)  This change makes the T.V.W.-My Madison T.V. signal available on most t.v. sets; but still depending on which way your are receiving your digital signal.

Still have questions??  I can try to help or you can go to this website:  www.dtv2009.gov

See you on T.V.!  Teri          tbarr@wisctv.com

ON YOUR SIDE: Buying Used Cars

January 15, 2009 - Leave a Response

Here’s more information to follow up our report on the increase in used car sales.  Reg-Trak indicates the sale of new cars throughout Southern Wisconsin in December was down more than 32% from one year ago.

We have an exclusive partnership with Consumer Reports who is indicating the biggest draw right now is side-stepping depreciation with the purchase of a used car.

Here’s a list of 1998-2007 models compiled by our partners; based on several years of better-than-average reliability.  The items checked include major and minor engine repairs, transmission, drive system, fuel system, electrical and climate systems, suspension, brakes, exhaust, paint/trim, body integrity, body hardware, power equipment and audio system.      This considered “best of the best:”   Acura Integra, MDX, RL, RSX, TL AND TSX; BMW M3, Buick LaCrosse, Honda Accord, Civic, Civic-Hybrid, CR-V, Element, Odyssey, Pilot and S2000; Infinity FX, G35, 130, 135 and QX4;  Lexus ES, GS (rwd), GX, IS, LS, RX and SC; Lincoln Continental and Town Car, Mazda Millenia, MX-5 Miata, Protege’ and 3; Mitsubishi Endeavor and Outlander, Nissan Altima, Maxima and Murano; Pontiac Vide, Porsche 911 (except 2003), Scion tC and xB, Subaru Baja, Forester, Impreza, Legacy and Outback; Toyota 4Runner, Avalon, Camry (except 2007 v6), Camry Solara, Celica, Corolla, Echo, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Matrix, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tundra (except 2007 v8 4wd), and Volvo S60.

And here’s what Consumer Reports considers “worst of the worst” with multiple years of worse than average reliability among the 1998-2007 models:  Buick Rendezvous (awd) and Terraza; Chevrolet Astro, Blazer, Colorado (4wd), s-10 pickup (4wd) Uplander and Venture; Chrysler Town and Country (awd), Dodge Grand Caravan (awd), GMC Canyon (4wd), Jimmy, S-15 Sonoma (4wd) and Safari; Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sedona, Land Rover Discover-LR3, Lincoln Aviator, Mercedes-Benz SL, Nissan Armada (4wd) and Titan (4wd), Olds Bravada and Silhouette; Pontiac Aztek, G6, Montana (trans sport and SV6); Saturn Relay, V.W. Cabriolet, Jetta sedan (turbo and V6) and touareg.

If you have a follow up question, I’ll be happy to try and answer it for you; or direct you to someone with the answer.

Until next time.. Teri
